This study was designed to evaluate the ability of RF-field radiation to induce oxidative stress and to act as a co-carcinogen if given in combination with the environmental pollutant 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX).

Murine L929 fibrosarcoma cells were exposed to a 900 MHz signal using either a continuous-wave or a GSM-modulated signal. Two SAR levels were used - 0.3 and 1.0 W/kg. The cells were RF-exposed for either 10 or 30 minutes, with or without MX treatment. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated soon after the RF exposure began, and at intervals up to 1 hour from exposure. Sham exposed and MX -treated cells (without RF exposure) were also evaluated for ROS production.

There was no indication that the RF exposure, with or without the MX treatment, induced formation of ROS under any of the experimental conditions. MX treatment, however, resulted in a statistically significant increase in ROS formation.
