The authors used cells from human glioma (MO54 cells) in this study, deigned assess whether exposure to a radiofrequency (RF) field could act as an environmental insult to invoke a stress response. Hsp27 and Hsp70 were used as stress markers.

Cells were exposed to continuous wave 1950 MHz or sham conditions for up to 2 hours. SARs were 1, 2, and 10 W/kg.

There was no difference in growth of the cells between sham and RF exposure. Similarly, there was no difference in expression of Hsp27 or Hsp70. There was a difference in the protein level of phosphorylated Hsp27 on exposure to the RF field for 1 or 2 hours at a SAR of 10 W/kg, although no change was observed at 1 or 2 W/kg.
