This
paper describes the occurrence of six cases of testicular cancer occurring
in police officers in contiguous counties in north-central USA between
the years 1979 and 1991. The authors state that the only common exposure
was the occupational practice of resting the radar gun on their lap
in proximity to the testicles. The rate of testicular cancer was 6.9
times that expected.
As
the authors point out a cluster
of cases such as this is notoriously difficult to interpret. Cluster
investigations are used mainly to formulate hypotheses.
