Cardiovascular effects


Researchers have examined the effects of RFR on the autonomic nervous system, as measured by its impact on the cardiovascular system. Mann, Roschke and colleagues (1998) did not find any effect on heart rate in young men exposed to 900 MHz. Braune (1998) found a slight increase in resting blood pressure after 35 minutes exposure to RFR at 900 MHz. However, when the authors repeated this study using randomization of the sequence of exposure, they found that EMF exposure had no effect on any of the outcomes, including blood pressure (Braune, 2002). Tahvanainen (2004) also found that exposure to RFR at 900 or 1800 MHz had no effect on either blood pressure or heart rate. Chang Nam (2006) did not find any cardiovascular changes in teenagers or adults after RFR exposure from a CDMA phone. They did find decreased skin resistance in the teenage group and in the males of the study. However, they did not randomize the sequence of the RFR and sham exposures. The sham exposure was done first in all subjects.
Barker (2007) found no effect from exposure to GSM or TETRA handsets in different transmission modes in 120 healthy volunteers. They checked blood pressure, heart rate variability, and blood levels of catechols.

Wilen (2007) found increased heart rate variability and very low frequency power during nighttime in RF plastic sealer operators. They postulated that this could be due to an adaptation of the thermoregulatory system and the cardiac autonomic modulation to a long-term low-level thermal exposure. Parazzini and colleagues (2007) tested the effect of RFR exposure at 900 MHz on the heart rate variability (HRV) on young adults. The found no effect on the main outcome of R-R interval on the electrocardiogram, and on most of the other parameters, but a weak effect on some. This latter effect was suggestive of an effect on the sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system.
